Our business history
When John Martin began selling hardware supplies to hotels and
motels in 1976, general managers and chief engineers kept asking
him to recommend someone to service their locks. At the time, the
hotel industry was growing quickly while the locksmith industry
was struggling to keep up with training to meet the demands. Hotel
staff were finding it difficult to locate locksmiths who could deal
with the complex master key systems of their properties.
Always one to meet a customer’s need, Martin trained as a
locksmith, relying mainly on lock manufacturer engineers whom he
worked with and with whom he developed professional
relationships. Martin then began selling service along with supplies
and his hotel rekeying service company took off. He was in demand
across the nation.
In the early 1980’s, his son, Tim, then age 12, began traveling and
working with his father during school vacations earning extra
money and seeing the country as well. After college, Tim rejoined
his father as a hotel lock specialist. Because of their specialization,
the company could be in and out of a hotel in less time than the
average locksmith who generally had to stop his work to take care
of automotive and residential emergency calls.
By the mid-1980’s the hotel industry was changing to card locks –
first mechanical and optical, then magnetic stripe and now Smart
Card locks. Martin and his crew all were certified in the various
types of electronic locks used in the hotel industry.
By 1990, Martin’s second son, Tom, then age 13, began working
during school vacations along side his father and brother and joined
the team after high school.
John retired from the locksmithing business in the last few years
and Tim and Tom keep things going. Both are licensed and
experienced Security Officers. They are licensed through the Florida
Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
Barbara, John's wife (and Tim and Tom's mom), is an award-
winning free-lance news journalist and editor. She will update the
website with news reports about the locksmith industry as well as
write investigative features.
